The midday sun, filtered through the cracks in the colossal stone blocks of the pharaoh’s tomb, cast long, dancing shadows across the chamber. Dust motes, ancient and undisturbed for millennia, swirled in the shafts of light like tiny golden sprites. Maya, her wrappings still a little rumpled from her recent adventures with Pip, settled herself against a sarcophagus, its hieroglyphs worn smooth by the passage of countless centuries. Pip, the minuscule, iridescent scarab, scuttled onto her outstretched hand, his tiny legs tickling her palm. He tilted his head, his multifaceted eyes seeming to absorb the very essence of the tomb.

“This place,” Maya began, her voice, a dry rustle like papyrus, filled the silence, “has seen more stories than any scribe could ever write.” She traced a faded image on the sarcophagus with a bandaged finger. “Look here, Pip. This depicts the great Pharaoh Akhen-Ra. He was a ruler of immense power, but also a dreamer. They say he spent his days gazing at the stars, trying to understand their secrets.”

Pip chirped, a sound like the faint tinkling of tiny bells, and nudged her finger.
