The Marker Beneath the Sky
The Space Hunters return to Earth to retrieve the star chart hidden by Kenny's father. They are met by a secret society of guardians who reveal that the marker is a living crystal containing a fragment of Kenny's father's consciousness. Kenny bonds with it, gaining a vision of the cosmic nexus, but a Hive assassin attacks, forcing a hasty escape. The chapter ends with Kenny realizing his father may still be reachable, and the crew setting course for the nexus.
The jump to Earth took the better part of a day, but to Kenny, it felt like an eternity. He sat in the common room, staring out at the streaking lines of hyperspace, his mind churning. The golden energy under his skin hummed softly, like a second heartbeat. Sona sat across from him, her amber eyes watching him with quiet concern.
“You’ve been quiet,” she said.
“Thinking.” Kenny rubbed his temples. “My mother’s message said the marker is in the park where my parents first met. I’ve walked past that fountain a thousand times. I never knew.”
