The air in the chamber grew thick with anticipation, a palpable thing that seemed to press in on us from all sides. Noah’s finger traced the last symbol on the worn parchment, his brow furrowed in concentration. "This," he whispered, his voice barely disturbing the quiet, "this has to be it. The inscription… it speaks of a 'veiled threshold,' a place where the stone remembers the dawn." His eyes, usually so steady, held a spark of something akin to awe.

Joseph, ever eager, bounced on the balls of his feet. "A veiled threshold? Like a secret door? Awesome! Let's find it!" He took a step forward, his boot scuffing against a loose stone, and I instinctively grabbed his arm. My heart, which had been thrumming a steady rhythm of excitement, suddenly lurched. The sound, small as it was, felt like a trumpet blast in the stillness.

My gaze snapped to the entrance of the chamber, a dark maw that swallowed the faint light filtering in from the passage behind us. A prickle of unease, cold and sharp, traced its way down my spine. Had we been too loud? Had *he* heard? The shadowy figure. He’d been a constant, unsettling presence, a whisper in the wind, a flicker in the periphery. Now, the silence felt heavier, charged with a new kind of threat.
