The Shadow's Pursuit
A close call! The shadowy figure nearly catches them. They must rely on quick thinking and teamwork to escape, realizing the danger is very real.
The air in the narrow passage grew heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and something else… something ancient and watchful. We’d just squeezed through a gap in the wall, a space Noah had painstakingly cleared of rubble, when the scraping sound echoed behind us. It was the distinct, unnerving scrape of stone against stone, not the natural settling of ruins, but a deliberate movement. My heart leaped into my throat, a frantic bird trapped in my chest.
“Did you hear that?” Joseph whispered, his voice a strained rasp. His usual boisterous energy had evaporated, replaced by a wide-eyed apprehension that mirrored my own.
Noah, ever the pragmatist, was already scanning the darkened corridor ahead. “It’s coming from behind us. We triggered something.” His brow was furrowed, his gaze sharp and assessing, even in the dim light filtering from the opening we’d just exited.
