The air in the forgotten passage grew thick, heavy with the scent of damp earth and something ancient, something that tickled the back of my throat with a hint of forgotten spices. Noah, ever the meticulous one, held his flickering lantern higher, its weak glow barely pushing back the oppressive darkness. “It’s a dead end, Adam,” he sighed, his voice a low murmur that seemed swallowed by the stone. “Just more rubble and cobwebs.”

I squinted, running my fingers over the rough-hewn wall. It felt solid, unyielding. Frustration pricked at me. We’d followed the last riddle, the one etched onto the crumbling mosaic in the Sunken Courtyard, and it had led us here, to this seemingly impenetrable barrier. The map, with its cryptic lines and faded ink, had promised a path, a way deeper into the heart of whatever this place was.

Joseph, who had been patiently nudging a loose stone with the toe of his boot, suddenly let out a grunt. “Hold on a sec, Noah, your light’s catching something.” He pointed his chin towards a section of the wall near the floor. I knelt, my heart giving a hopeful leap. Faintly etched into the stone, almost completely obscured by centuries of grime, were symbols. They weren’t like the ornate carvings we’d seen elsewhere in the ruins; these were simpler, more primal.
