Chapter 13
The Antagonist's Reaction
The shadowy figure confronts them, demanding the artifact. They don't understand its true nature, driven by a misguided desire for control.
The light, or what little of it managed to pierce the ancient gloom, seemed to recoil from the object cradled in my hands. It wasn't gold, nor jewels, nor anything that glittered with earthly promise. It was… quiet. A smooth, dark stone, warm to the touch, humming with a silent song that resonated deep within my bones. Noah, ever the observer, was already scribbling in his worn notebook, his brow furrowed in concentration, while Joseph, his usual boisterous energy subdued by awe, simply stared, his mouth slightly agape. We had done it. We had found it. The legendary artifact, the key to God's wisdom, lay here, in the heart of this forgotten chamber, within the very walls of the Historical Temple.
A sudden shift in the air, a disturbance that felt colder than the stone walls, broke the reverie. It was the kind of chill that prickles the skin, not from a draft, but from a presence. I instinctively tightened my grip on the artifact, my heart giving a nervous lurch. The shadowy figure. They had followed us. I could feel their eyes on us, a tangible weight pressing down, even though I couldn't see them clearly in the dim light.
"Give it to me," a voice rasped, low and guttural, slicing through the sacred silence. It was the same voice from before, laced with an urgency that bordered on desperation. The figure stepped from the deeper shadows, coalescing into a form that was both familiar and terrifying. It was the same cloaked shape that had haunted our path, its features obscured by the cowl, but the intent was unmistakable, burning like a dark ember in the gloom.
