The air in the chamber was thick, heavy with a silence that pressed in on my ears. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom from a crack high above, illuminating the final obstacle between us and… well, whatever it was we were seeking. The map, now creased and worn from our journey, lay spread on a pedestal, its final markings pointing to a series of interlocking stone discs set into the wall. They were etched with symbols, some familiar from the earlier riddles, others utterly alien. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the encroaching quiet. Behind us, I could hear it – the scrape of a boot, the whisper of fabric, the undeniable sound of pursuit. The Shadowy Figure was here.

“They’re close,” Noah breathed, his voice barely audible, his eyes darting towards the entrance of the chamber. He’d been the most worried about this part, his usual calm fraying at the edges with every creak and groan of the ancient structure.

Joseph, ever the optimist, clapped Noah on the shoulder, a little too hard. “Don’t sweat it, Noah! We’ve faced worse, right? Remember that giant spider in the West Passage? This is just a fancy lock.”
