Chapter 5
The Heart of the Storm
Jabu corners Thandiwe, demanding the artifact. A tense confrontation erupts. Thandiwe must unleash the full extent of her magic, a raw, untamed force, to defend her home and expose Jabu's true, desperate intentions.
The late afternoon sun, usually a comforting blanket over Orange Farm, felt more like a harsh spotlight, illuminating every crack in the dusty streets, every weary face. Thandiwe clutched the small, intricately carved wooden orb tighter, its smooth surface cool against her sweaty palm. It pulsed with a faint, internal warmth, a secret heartbeat only she seemed to feel. The weight of it, both physical and metaphorical, pressed down on her. She had promised Gogo Naledi she’d keep it safe, a promise that felt as heavy as the sky itself.
She’d been heading home, the usual route past the bustling market stalls where the scent of grilled maize mingled with the less pleasant aroma of overflowing bins. Lerato had been with her, her laughter a bright counterpoint to the ever-present hum of worry that underscored life in their township. Thandiwe had agreed to take a shortcut, a less-traveled path that wound behind the abandoned factory, a place whispered about in hushed tones, a place where shadows clung even in daylight.
And that’s where he’d appeared. Jabulani Sibeko. Jabu. He’d emerged from the deepening gloom like a predator finally cornering its prey, flanked by two of his usual hulking shadows. His gold chain, thick as a man’s thumb, glinted even in the fading light, a gaudy symbol of his ill-gotten power. He’d stopped Thandiwe dead in her tracks, his eyes, hard and calculating, fixed on the small pouch tied to her waist.
