The chipped enamel mug felt warm in Thandiwe’s hands, a small comfort against the gnawing chill that had settled deep in her bones, a chill that had nothing to do with the evening air. She sat opposite Lerato at their usual spot by the dusty edge of the market, the cacophony of vendors hawking their wares a familiar, almost soothing, soundtrack to their lives. But tonight, the sounds felt distant, muffled by the heavy secret Thandiwe carried.
“You’ve been quiet, Thandi,” Lerato said, her voice a low murmur that cut through the din. She nudged Thandiwe’s knee with her own, her dark eyes filled with a familiar concern. Lerato, with her sharp wit and even sharper observations, was the anchor in Thandiwe’s often turbulent world.
Thandiwe hesitated. How did one even begin to explain that the strange tingling in her fingertips, the way the wilting flowers on their stall had perked up when she’d touched them, the unsettling dreams filled with swirling lights and ancient whispers, were more than just stress? How did she tell Lerato that the smooth, cool stone she’d found buried near the old baobab tree seemed to hum with a life of its own, and that sometimes, just sometimes, she felt it calling to her?
