Anya, her delicate features etched with a weariness that belied her spirit, sat by the fireplace, her gaze lost in the dancing flames. The ordeal had left its mark, a subtle tremor in her hands when she reached for her tea, a shadow in her eyes that no amount of rest could fully dispel. Dmitri, ever her watchful guardian, sat opposite her, his own anxieties a silent hum beneath his composed exterior. Nickola, the boisterous energy that usually characterized him subdued, leaned against the mantelpiece, his usual easy grin replaced by a thoughtful frown.

“Are you sure you don’t want to speak with the authorities, Anya?” Dmitri’s voice was gentle, laced with concern. “They can still apprehend him, ensure he never… never does this again.”

Anya shook her head, a faint, almost imperceptible movement. “What would they do, Dmitri? He’s too well-connected, too untouchable. He would simply disappear, and then who knows what he might do to retaliate. He’d make sure I regretted ever crossing him.” She shivered, pulling her shawl tighter. “Besides, the damage is done. The fear… that’s the real prison.”
