The heavy oak door creaked open, revealing a dimly lit chamber that smelled of damp stone and something faintly metallic. Dmitri’s heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence. Nickola stood beside him, his hand resting on the hilt of the hunting knife he’d procured, his gaze sharp and unyielding. They had followed the cryptic instructions from Anya’s smuggled note, a trail of breadcrumbs leading them deep into the labyrinthine underbelly of the city, far from the gilded cages of the theater.

“This is it,” Dmitri whispered, his voice a rough rasp. The air was thick with a palpable tension, a sense of waiting. He remembered Anya’s laugh, bright and clear as a bell, a sound that seemed impossibly distant now. He had to find her, had to tear down whatever walls had been erected between them.

Nickola nodded, his eyes scanning the shadows. “Stay close. And be ready for anything.” He stepped through the doorway, his movements fluid and economical. Dmitri followed, the faint glow of a single oil lamp casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to writhe with unseen life. The chamber was sparsely furnished, a rough-hewn table and two chairs the only concessions to comfort. On the table lay a single, folded piece of parchment, identical to the paper Anya had used.
