The air in the small, sparsely furnished room was thick with the stale scent of fear and desperation. Anya, pale and drawn, sat huddled on a worn armchair, her eyes wide and unfocused as she recounted the horrors of her confinement. Dmitri, his face a mask of grim fury, held her hand, his knuckles white. Nickola, ever the steady presence, stood by the window, his gaze sweeping the darkened street below as if expecting an ambush at any moment.
"He… he wanted the ledger," Anya whispered, her voice raspy. "The one I found… the one with all the names. He said it was his insurance, his control." She shuddered, pulling a thin blanket tighter around her. "He threatened to… to ruin us all. To make sure no one ever trusted us again. He showed me… he showed me what he could do."
Dmitri squeezed her hand, his own fear a cold knot in his stomach. He knew what she meant. The 'manipulator,' as they had come to call him, was a master of psychological warfare, of subtle destruction. He had threatened not just Anya, but their family, their reputation, their very lives.
