The heavy oak door creaked open, revealing not the sterile white of a hospital room, but the opulent, if slightly faded, grandeur of a private study. Anya stood silhouetted against the dim light filtering through the heavy velvet curtains, her form still fragile, her eyes holding a depth of experience that hadn't been there before. Dmitri rushed forward, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs, but Nickola's hand on his arm held him back. Anya’s gaze, though unfocused, seemed to sweep over them, a silent acknowledgment.
“Anya,” Dmitri finally managed, his voice thick with unshed tears.
She offered a small, almost imperceptible nod. Her movements were slow, deliberate, as if each limb had to be coaxed into obedience. She walked further into the room, her slippers making no sound on the Persian rug. The air was thick with the scent of old books and something else… a faint, lingering perfume that was distinctly hers.
