Beside him, Nickola moved with a quiet, coiled tension, his gaze sweeping over the cavernous space as if cataloging every shadow, every potential threat. The cryptic message, scrawled on a crumpled piece of paper found tucked beneath Anya’s favorite worn ballet slipper, had led them here, to this forgotten corner of the city, a place that reeked of desperation and decay.

“Anya?” Dmitri’s voice cracked, a raw plea that echoed in the oppressive silence. He clutched the crumpled note, its edges softened by his anxious grip. It had been a desperate gamble, a message woven into the rhythm of a childhood lullaby, a secret language only he and Anya understood. He’d prayed it was enough.

A faint rustle from the far corner of the warehouse answered him. It was a sound so small, so fragile, it was almost swallowed by the immensity of the space. Dmitri surged forward, Nickola a silent, steady presence at his flank.
