Volkov, his carefully constructed facade crumbled, looked less like a patron of the arts and more like a cornered rat, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

Dmitri, his knuckles white where he gripped Anya’s arm, felt a surge of protective fury. He had imagined this moment countless times, a triumphant reunion, but the reality was laced with a bitter tang of betrayal. He glanced at Nickola, whose gaze, usually so steady, flickered with a mixture of shock and grim satisfaction. They had done it. They had unraveled the tangled threads of Volkov's deceit, the elaborate scheme to silence Anya and profit from her disappearance.

Anya finally spoke, her voice a fragile whisper that nonetheless cut through the tension. "He wanted to stop me," she said, her gaze drifting to the crumpled papers on the floor—the forged contracts, the fabricated accusations. "He knew I had discovered his dealings with the syndicate, the money laundering through the theater's endowments. He planned to disappear, to leave me to take the fall."
