“He confessed everything,” Dmitri murmured, his voice raspy. He traced the rim of his teacup, the porcelain cool beneath his fingertips. “Voronov. It was all him. The financial ruin of the theater, the blackmail, the… the silencing of anyone who got too close to his dealings.” He shuddered, the image of Anya’s frail, terrified face flashing behind his eyes. She had been so brave, so resilient, but the ordeal had left its mark, a subtle tremor in her hands when she danced, a flicker of unease in her eyes when the stage lights flared too brightly.
Nickola nodded, his gaze fixed on the embers. “He thought he could control everything, didn’t he? Everyone. He saw Anya as just another pawn, another asset to be manipulated. He underestimated her. And he underestimated us.” A grim satisfaction flickered in his eyes, a stark contrast to his usual easygoing demeanor. He had seen the depths of human cruelty in his work, but the calculated perfidy of Voronov, a man who had moved so freely amongst them, left him cold.
