Nickola, ever the steady presence, sat by the hearth, his gaze fixed on the flickering flames. He had held Anya when she first arrived, a ghost of her former self, and the memory still pricked at him. The schemer, the influential figure Anya had exposed, was no longer a shadowy threat, but a name whispered with a chilling finality. Justice, as Dmitri had promised, was being served, though the wounds of this winter’s tale ran deep.

Anya stirred, a soft sigh escaping her lips. “Dmitri,” she murmured, her voice raspy. He leaned closer, his hand finding hers, his thumb stroking her chilled skin. “The note… it was all true, wasn’t it?”
