The Gauntlet

The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick and damp, smelling of rust and forgotten things. Moonlight, fractured by grimy panes of glass high above, painted shifting patterns on the concrete floor. Dmitri’s breath hitched, a cold knot tightening in his chest. This was it. The address Elena had scribbled on the crumpled napkin, the place where Anya’s last garbled message had flickered before cutting out. Beside him, Nickola’s hand rested lightly on his arm, a silent anchor in the rising tide of Dmitri’s panic.

“Are you sure about this, Dima?” Nickola’s voice was a low rumble, a stark contrast to the frantic thrumming in Dmitri’s ears. He scanned the cavernous space, his eyes sharp, missing nothing.

Dmitri nodded, his gaze fixed on a shadowy corner where a single, bare bulb cast a weak, yellow glow. “It has to be. The signal… it was faint, but I recognized the ambient noise. This place.” He swallowed, the sound unnaturally loud in the stillness. “Elena said he’d be here. Sergei.”
