Chapter 44
Episode 44
The air in the Petrova dacha hung thick with the scent of pine and unspoken grief. Anya, though physically recovered, was a shadow of her former self. The vibrant spark that had once ignited the stage now flickered, dimmed by the trauma she had endured. Dmitri sat beside her, his hand a steady anchor on her trembling one, the silence between them a testament to the chasm that had opened in their lives. Nickola, ever the observer, watched them from the worn armchair by the fire, the crackling flames mirroring the turmoil within him. He had tracked down the last remnants of the conspiracy, the tendrils of power that had ensnared Anya, and brought them to justice. Yet, the victory felt hollow. The cost had been too high. Anya’s laughter, once a melody that filled their days, was now a fragile whisper, easily broken.
“Are you sure you’re ready, Anya?” Dmitri’s voice was a gentle rumble, laced with his concern. He knew the world she had inhabited, the dazzling illusion that had been shattered.
Anya’s eyes, a deep, melancholic blue, met his. “I have to be, Dmitri. This… this is my life. Or it was.” She looked down at her hands, the once-nimble fingers now hesitant. “The stage… it feels so far away.”
