The chill of the Moscow winter seemed to seep into Dmitri’s bones, a cold that had nothing to do with the biting wind outside and everything to do with the gnawing emptiness in his chest. Anya, his vibrant, effervescent sister, had vanished like a wisp of smoke, leaving behind only the phantom echo of her laughter and the suffocating weight of unanswered questions. Nickola, his steadfast friend, sat across from him at their usual table in the dimly lit café, the steam from their untouched cups of tea swirling like the confusion that clouded their thoughts.
“We’ve been through everything, Dmitri,” Nickola said, his voice a low rumble, laced with a weariness that mirrored Dmitri’s own. “Her apartment, the theater, her friends… no one has seen or heard anything.”
Dmitri traced the rim of his teacup, the ceramic cool against his fingertips. “But there must be something. Anya wouldn’t just… disappear. Not without a reason.” He remembered her, just days before, her eyes alight with the thrill of her upcoming solo in *Swan Lake*. She’d been so alive, so full of promise.
