The air in the grand ballroom hung thick with the scent of wilting roses and the ghost of champagne. Anya, her limbs still stiff and her spirit a fragile bloom unfurling in the hesitant sunlight, leaned against the cool marble of a nearby pillar. The ordeal had been a brutal dance, a pirouette into darkness from which she had been snatched back by Dmitri and Nickola. Their faces, etched with relief and the lingering shadows of fear, were the most beautiful sight she had ever beheld.
Dmitri, his usual boisterous energy subdued, kept a protective arm around her, his gaze scanning the crowd as if expecting the serpent to reappear. Nickola, ever the pragmatist, was already engaged in hushed, urgent conversations with members of the theater’s security, his voice a low rumble of authority. The manipulator, a man whose name now tasted like ash on Anya’s tongue, had been exposed, his web of deceit torn asunder. But the threads, so deeply woven into the fabric of this world, still clung, unseen, to many.
Anya watched as the last vestiges of the party began to dissipate. The glittering facade was cracking, revealing the weariness beneath. So many smiles had been masks, so many congratulations hollow. She had seen the hunger in their eyes, the envy, the desperate yearning for what she possessed. And she had seen the cold, calculated ambition that had led to her abduction.
