The oppressive silence of the abandoned warehouse pressed in on Dmitri and Nickola, a stark contrast to the hushed anticipation of the theater. Anya’s note, crumpled and tear-stained, lay between them on the grimy floor, a fragile beacon in the encroaching darkness. The cryptic message, a jumble of seemingly disconnected phrases and symbols, had led them here, to this forgotten corner of the city, far from the gilded cages of the ballet world. They’d followed the breadcrumbs Anya had so desperately left, each step a gamble, each twist and turn a tightened knot of fear in their chests.
Nickola traced a symbol on the note with a calloused fingertip. "This… this is the old merchant’s guild mark. My grandfather used to talk about them. They were notorious for their… discretion." He looked up, his usually jovial eyes shadowed with grim understanding. "Discretion often means burying secrets deep."
Dmitri’s jaw tightened. The powerful, influential figure Anya had alluded to was no longer a phantom. The threads were starting to weave together, forming a tapestry of corruption and deceit that reached far beyond the prima ballerina’s sudden disappearance. “Where would they hide something? Something Anya wouldn’t want found?”
