The air in the Petrova’s study was thick with the scent of old paper and simmering grief. Dmitri traced the worn spine of a ballet manual, his fingers finding no solace. Anya was safe, yes, but the shadows that had clung to her, the fear that had etched itself onto her usually vibrant face, remained. The man, Viktor Volkov, was in custody, his web of deceit unraveled. But the damage, the insidious rot he had sown within the hallowed halls of the Grand Theatre, lingered like a persistent chill. Nickola, usually a whirlwind of restless energy, sat quietly by the fireplace, his gaze fixed on the dancing flames, as if seeking answers in their unpredictable flicker.
"He confessed everything," Dmitri murmured, his voice raspy. "The blackmail, the staged 'accidents' to discredit her, the plan to silence her permanently once she realized the extent of his financial malfeasance." He closed his eyes, picturing Anya’s small, determined face as she’d recounted the ordeal, her voice trembling but resolute. She had seen the ledger, the carefully hidden accounts that would have ruined Volkov and implicated others. She had been too brave, too principled, and for that, she had paid a terrible price.
Nickola finally stirred, his gaze shifting from the fire to Dmitri. "And the others? The ones who helped him?"
