The frost etched delicate ferns across the windowpanes of Dmitri’s small, sparsely furnished apartment. Outside, the Moscow sky was a bruised, wintery grey, mirroring the gnawing ache in his chest. Anya was safe, yes. The relief had been a tidal wave, washing over him, leaving him breathless and weak. But the silence that had followed her rescue was a different kind of torment. She was a ghost in her own life, the vibrant spark that had defined her dulled by the ordeal. The opulent world of the Bolshoi, once her sun, now seemed to cast long, chilling shadows.
Nickola sat across from him, his broad shoulders slumped, his usual easy humor absent. He cradled a mug of tea, his gaze fixed on the swirling steam as if seeking answers within its ephemeral dance. “She’s still not speaking much, is she?” he finally said, his voice rough.
Dmitri shook his head, the movement heavy. “Only when she has to. She’ll eat, she’ll dress, she’ll stare out that window for hours. But the Anya we knew… she’s still somewhere in that darkness, Nickola.” He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture one of utter weariness. The architect of Anya’s torment, the esteemed impresario, had been exposed, his web of deceit unraveled, his power stripped away. Justice, as they understood it, had been meted out. Yet, the victory felt hollow, tainted by the profound damage inflicted.
