The silence in the dressing room was a heavy blanket, muffling the usual pre-performance buzz. Anya Petrova, usually a whirlwind of nervous energy and focused discipline, sat on the velvet stool, her face pale, her eyes wide and unseeing. The elaborate costume, a cascade of midnight blue and silver, felt like a shroud. Dmitri, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs, knelt before her, his hands hovering, unsure how to soothe the profound shock etched onto her features. Nickola stood by the door, a silent sentinel, his gaze sweeping the opulent space as if expecting the shadows to coalesce into a tangible threat.

"Anya," Dmitri’s voice was a raw whisper, laced with a desperation that tore at him. "Are you… are you alright?"

She blinked, her gaze slowly focusing on his face, then on Nickola. A shiver traced its way down her spine, a phantom echo of the icy fear that had gripped her. "He… he said… he said I would never dance again," she murmured, her voice brittle, like thin ice cracking underfoot. "That they would ensure it."
