Nickola stood a little apart, his gaze sweeping over Anya, cataloging the subtle tremors that betrayed her inner turmoil. The opulent dressing room, usually a sanctuary of glamour and preparation, felt like a cage, its gilded mirrors reflecting not the triumphant ballerina, but a woman scarred by what she had witnessed.
"Anya," Dmitri’s voice was a low murmur, laced with a tenderness that had been absent for too long. "Are you… are you well?"
She offered a weak smile, a ghost of her usual radiance. "As well as can be expected, my darling Dmitri. The ordeal… it leaves its mark." Her voice, though soft, carried a steely undertone, a resilience that Dmitri recognized instantly.
