The air in the small, nondescript apartment was thick with the scent of stale coffee and unspoken relief. Anya, wrapped in a borrowed robe that was too large for her slender frame, sat on the edge of a worn armchair, her gaze distant. The ordeal had left its mark, a subtle tremor in her hands, a haunted quality in her eyes that Dmitri found himself constantly trying to soothe with his presence. Nickola, ever the pragmatist, perched on the armrest of the sofa, nursing a mug of tea, his usual boisterous energy subdued by the gravity of their recent adventure.
"It's over, Anya," Dmitri murmured, his voice a low rumble of comfort. He sat beside her, his arm a protective shield around her shoulders. "They've been apprehended. The man who orchestrated all of this… he won't hurt anyone again."
Anya finally turned her head, her eyes, the color of a stormy sea, met his. "But the fear, Dmitri. It lingers. Like a phantom ache after a limb is gone." She looked down at her hands, flexing her fingers as if testing their reality. "For so long, I believed I was trapped in a dream, a nightmare from which I couldn't awaken."
