Chapter 13

Episode 13

The air in the Petrova apartment, once thick with the scent of Anya’s rosewater and the hushed anticipation of performance, now hung heavy with a suffocating silence. Dmitri traced the delicate embroidery on his sister’s favorite shawl, the silk cool and foreign beneath his fingertips. Beside him, Nickola’s gaze was fixed on the framed photograph of Anya, her smile impossibly bright, a stark contrast to the muted tones of their reality. The ordeal had left its mark on them both. Anya, though physically unharmed, was a ghost of her former self, her eyes holding a fear that no amount of reassurance could dispel. Nickola, ever the pragmatist, had been instrumental in piecing together the final fragments of Dubois’s scheme, his sharp intellect cutting through the layers of deception. He had navigated the labyrinthine financial dealings, unearthed the hidden accounts, and provided the irrefutable evidence that had brought Dubois to her knees. Yet, even he seemed subdued, the usual spark in his eyes dimmed by the lingering shadow of what they had endured.
