The air in the Petrova’s grand St. Petersburg apartment still hung thick with the scent of Anya’s favorite jasmine perfume, a poignant reminder of her absence. Dmitri traced the delicate embroidery on a discarded silk scarf, his knuckles white. Beside him, Nickola methodically re-examined the few belongings Anya had left behind – a worn copy of Tchaikovsky’s letters, a small, intricately carved wooden bird, and a tightly bound journal. The initial shock had given way to a gnawing unease, a premonition that Anya’s disappearance was far from a simple act of envy or a desperate escape.

“Anything, Nickola?” Dmitri’s voice was a low rasp, strained with exhaustion and worry.

Nickola shook his head, his gaze fixed on the journal. “It’s mostly dance notations, rehearsal schedules… and then, a few entries, dated just before she vanished. They’re… cryptic. She writes about ‘shadows clinging to gilded cages’ and ‘music that silences truth.’ It sounds like she was onto something, Dmitri. Something dangerous.”
