The air in the old house felt thick with unspoken words, a familiar weight that pressed down on Brandie’s chest. It had been a week since the funeral, and the silence, once a comforting blanket woven with memories of Grandma Willow, now felt like a shroud. She’d been shuffling through boxes, a task both heartbreaking and necessary, when she’d stumbled upon Aunt Sheila’s frantic call. Tim, her ever-steady anchor, had been beside her, his hand a warm, grounding presence on her arm as she listened, her own voice a reedy whisper. Grandma Willow, her vibrant, nature-loving grandmother, had taken a fall. Not a serious one, Aunt Sheila had stressed, but enough to warrant concern and a few days of rest.

Brandie felt a familiar knot of anxiety tighten in her stomach. Grandma Willow, who had always seemed as rooted and unshakeable as the ancient oak in her backyard, now seemed fragile. The image of her grandmother, frail and dependent, was a jarring contrast to the robust woman who had taught her to identify every herb by scent and to read the stories in the wind.

“I should go,” Brandie said, her voice barely audible. Tim squeezed her arm.
