The velvet of night was a familiar shroud, yet for Katja, it had become a suffocating cloak. Vladislaus, her King, her eternal love, wove it around her with threads of devotion so tightly spun they threatened to steal her breath. His gaze, a bottomless well of ancient affection, followed her every movement, a silent vow etched into the very fabric of their shared eternity. He saw her, of course, but did he truly see her? Did he perceive the tremor in her hands as she traced the frost patterns on the impossibly cold glass of their chamber window, or the ache in her soul that pulsed with the memory of sunlight?

He called it protection, this gilded cage he had so meticulously constructed. Her poems, once vibrant with the blush of dawn and the whisper of summer breezes, now spoke of moonlit tears and the silent scream of shadows.

“My love,” Vladislaus’s voice, a low, resonant rumble that always sent a shiver down her spine—a shiver that was no longer entirely of pleasure—broke through her reverie. He stood behind her, his presence a warm, formidable force against her back. His arms, strong as ancient oaks, encircled her waist, drawing her closer. “You drift again. Are the shadows too deep tonight?”
