The air in the forgotten glade hung thick with the scent of petrichor and a silence so profound it hummed. Katja, cloaked in shadows that clung to her like a second skin, moved with a grace that was both predatory and ethereal. Her human steps had been light, a dancer’s tread; now, they were the whisper of silk over stone, a sound that belonged to the deepest night. She sought the Whisperers, beings older than the stones of Vladislaus’s castle, older even than the memory of the sun on human skin. They dwelled in places where the veil between worlds thinned, where truths, too terrible or too beautiful for mortal minds, were spun into existence.

Her quest had led her far from the suffocating opulence of Vladislaus’s court, far from the suffocating possessiveness of his love. He hunted her, she knew, his ancient heart a tempest of fury and wounded pride. But she could not remain his possession, his returned echo. Her soul, though now steeped in the eternal night, still yearned for the forgotten melodies of daylight, for the freedom that had been stolen from her twice over. The poets of old, whose verses she’d once breathed like air, had sung of choices, of destinies forged not by decree but by will. And Katja, the poet, the warrior’s wife, the vampire, would forge her own.

The glade opened before her, a cathedral of ancient trees whose gnarled branches clawed at the star-dusted sky. At its center, a pool of water, impossibly still, reflected the cosmos with a clarity that defied the terrestrial. It was said that the Whisperers communed with this pool, their voices carried on the currents of its silent depths.
