The air in the small, crowded room was thick with the scent of unwashed bodies and the gnawing fear that had become their constant companion. Ugochi traced the rough wood grain of the wall with a finger, the familiar ache of hunger a dull throb beneath the sharper sting of uncertainty. Days had blurred into a monotonous cycle of waking, waiting, and the suffocating silence that often descended between the gruff commands of their captors. Chinemema, huddled beside her, let out a soft sigh, her breath a faint mist in the dim light filtering through a single, barred window.
"Do you think anyone is even looking for us?" Chinemema whispered, her voice raspy from disuse and anxiety.
Ugochi’s heart clenched. It was a question that haunted them all, a serpent coiling in the pit of their stomachs. But to voice it, to acknowledge the possibility that they had been forgotten, felt like a betrayal of the fierce hope they clung to. "They are," Ugochi replied, her voice steadier than she felt. "Mama is looking. Teacher Udechukwu is looking. Everyone." She tried to inject conviction into her words, a shield against the encroaching despair.
