The air in Okoro-Imo hung thick with a silence that was not of peace, but of absence. It pressed down on the villagers, a palpable weight that settled in their chests, making each breath a conscious effort. The usual morning bustle, the cheerful greetings exchanged over steaming bowls of akara, the children’s laughter echoing from the dusty paths – all of it had been snuffed out, leaving behind a void as vast and terrifying as the night sky. Mrs. Itego sat by her hearth, the embers glowing dull red, each flicker a phantom of the hope that had once danced there. Her hands, usually busy with mending or preparing meals, lay idle in her lap, her gaze fixed on the empty stool where Ugochi would sit, her young face alight with a thousand questions. The scent of woodsmoke, once a comfort, now seemed to carry the acrid tang of despair.
“We cannot simply wait,” a voice, steady and deep, cut through the heavy quiet of her compound. Mr. Udechukwu stood at the threshold, his presence a familiar anchor in this sea of disarray. His eyes, usually twinkling with a gentle wisdom, were now shadowed with a solemn resolve. He carried himself with an age-old dignity, yet beneath the calm surface, one could sense the tremor of urgency that had seized their community.
Mrs. Itego looked up, her eyes red-rimmed but her spirit, though battered, not broken. “Elder,” she managed, her voice raspy. “What news?”
