Chapter 12
A Mother's Risky Gambit
Driven by her past trauma and unwavering love, Mrs. Itego takes a significant risk, pursuing a dangerous lead that others deem too perilous. Her resourcefulness is pushed to its limits.
The air in Okoro-Imo hung thick with a silence that was the antithesis of peace. It was the silence of absence, of stolen laughter, of dreams abruptly extinguished. Mrs. Itego moved through it like a ghost in her own home, the familiar walls now echoing with the phantom footsteps of her daughter, Ugochi. Each creak of the floorboards, each rustle of the palm fronds outside, was a cruel mimicry of a life that had been ripped away. Her hands, usually busy with the comforting rhythm of domestic chores, now clenched and unclenched at her sides, a testament to the storm raging within.
The days had bled into an indistinguishable blur of anxious waiting and fruitless inquiry. The elders had met, their faces etched with a shared grief and helplessness. The memory of another loss, a wound that had never truly healed, throbbed with a fresh intensity, whispering dark possibilities into the hollow spaces of her heart. She saw Ugochi’s bright, curious eyes in every flicker of the lamplight, heard her gentle voice in the sigh of the wind.
One sweltering afternoon, as the sun beat down relentlessly on the parched earth, a man named Chukwu, a trader who sometimes ventured further afield than most, sought her out. His eyes, usually so sharp and knowing, were clouded with a mixture of fear and hesitant information. He spoke in hushed tones, as if the very air might betray him.
