The air in the dim, damp space was heavy with the unspoken. Days had bled into a monotonous stretch of fear, punctuated only by the gruff commands of their captors and the rustle of straw beneath their bare feet. Ugochi, her small body aching from the unyielding ground, found her gaze drifting to the sliver of light that pierced the gloom through a crack in the rough-hewn wall. It was a meager offering, yet it was enough. Enough to trace the slow march of the sun, enough to mark the passage of time, enough to feed a flicker of defiance in her heart.

She watched the shadows lengthen and recede, a silent observer in a world that had abruptly shrunk to the confines of this suffocating enclosure. Her captors, a collection of hardened faces and rough hands, moved with a predictable rhythm. They brought meager rations – a handful of grain, a splash of water – at roughly the same intervals each day. There was the heavy tread of the one they called "Chief," a man whose silence was more menacing than any shout. Then came the younger, more restless ones, their eyes darting, their movements impatient. Ugochi cataloged these details, not out of morbid curiosity, but with a growing sense of purpose. It was a small rebellion, this act of observation, a way to reclaim a sliver of agency in a situation where all agency had been stripped away.

Beside her, Chinemema stirred, her breath a soft sigh against the quiet. "Ugochi," she whispered, her voice raspy. "Are you awake?"
