The scholarship offer, embossed with the crest of the university he’d also vied for, sat on a side table like a gaudy trophy, a stark reminder of his own deferred dreams. The acceptance letter, tucked away in his backpack, felt suddenly hollow, a consolation prize in a game he hadn’t realized he was losing.
“Eli,” she’d said, her voice a low murmur, devoid of the warmth that used to bloom in his chest at its sound. “You’re back.”
