The air in Conrad’s apartment hung thick with the scent of stale pizza and unspoken words. Eli nursed a lukewarm beer, his gaze fixed on the condensation tracing ephemeral paths down the glass. Across from him, Conrad, usually a whirlwind of boisterous energy, was uncharacteristically subdued, his fingers idly tracing the rim of his own mug. Alicia, perched on the armrest of the sofa, her usual effervescence dimmed, offered a small, tight smile. They were the quiet observers, the keepers of the keys, and tonight, the weight of those keys seemed to press down on them all.

“So,” Eli began, his voice a rough imitation of its former warmth, “you two have been seeing a lot of Claire.” It wasn’t a question. He’d seen her, of course, in glimpses. A flash of her familiar auburn hair disappearing around a corner, the distant echo of her laughter drifting from a café. Each sighting was a fresh sting, a reminder of the chasm that had opened between them.

Conrad shifted, his gaze meeting Eli’s with a flicker of something unreadable. “She’s… she’s doing well, Eli. Really well.”
