Alicia’s small apartment, usually a haven of shared laughter and whispered secrets, felt charged with a different kind of energy. The air, thick with the scent of brewing chamomile tea, held a palpable tension that even Conrad, usually adept at diffusing any awkwardness, couldn’t quite dissipate. He sat across from her, his brow furrowed, his gaze flicking between Alicia and the woman who was currently his girlfriend’s closest confidante, Claire. Claire, for her part, was a study in controlled composure, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her eyes fixed on a point somewhere beyond the floral pattern of the rug.
"He's just… he's not seeing it, Alicia," Claire finally said, her voice a low murmur that barely disturbed the quiet. "He thinks I deliberately set out to hurt him. That I planned it all, this scholarship, this whole future, just to spite him."
Alicia leaned forward, her expression a mixture of sympathy and quiet resolve. She understood Claire’s predicament better than most. She’d watched Claire wrestle with the weight of Eli’s emotional struggles, seen the toll it had taken, the quiet sacrifice. “And you’ve told him? You’ve explained why you felt you *had* to?”
