Chapter 9
Roric's Doubt
Alice meets Roric, the charismatic rebel leader. He is wary of her, especially when he senses she might be a seer, a group his rebels distrust.
The air in the hidden alcove was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something wild and untamed that settled deep in Alice’s lungs. She huddled deeper into the roughspun cloak, the coarse fabric a welcome contrast to the silken robes she’d once worn. Outside, the muffled sounds of the city – distant shouts, the creak of ships, the low hum of a thousand lives – felt like a world away. Here, in the forgotten spaces beneath the city’s skin, a different kind of life pulsed, one of shadows and whispered secrets.
A flicker of movement at the edge of her vision drew her attention. A figure emerged from the deeper gloom, not with the stealth of a hunter, but with a deliberate, almost weary stride. He was tall, his frame lean and corded with muscle beneath a worn leather jerkin. His face, etched with lines that spoke of hard sun and harder choices, was currently cast in a shadow that deepened his already serious expression. He paused, his gaze sweeping over the small space, and then settled on her.
Alice’s breath hitched. There was an aura about him, a quiet authority that was both commanding and unnerving. It wasn’t the raw power of Elder Kaelen, a power that felt ancient and suffocating, but something more grounded, more human. Yet, there was a prickle of unease that traced its way down her spine. She could feel it, a subtle dissonance in the air around him, a faint hum that she’d learned to recognize, a sign of something hidden.
