Chapter 6
Familiar Faces
To her horror, Alice spots members of the Oracle clan in Oakhaven. Their presence means her past is catching up, and her disguise may not be enough.
The salt spray kissed Alice’s cheeks, a familiar, comforting caress that had become her only constant in this new, chaotic world. Oakhaven, the port city she’d chosen as her sanctuary, pulsed with a life entirely its own, a vibrant tapestry woven from the shouts of sailors, the clang of hammers, and the murmur of a hundred languages. She’d buried her silver hair beneath layers of soot and dye, a desperate attempt to erase the seer she was, to become just another shadow in the throng. For weeks, it had worked. The gnawing fear that had been her constant companion had begun to recede, replaced by a fragile hope that perhaps, just perhaps, she might finally be free.
She worked at a small bakery, her hands, once accustomed to the delicate movements of weaving prophecies, now dusted with flour and sticky with dough. The rhythmic kneading, the warmth of the ovens, the simple, honest scent of baking bread – it was a balm to her fractured spirit. She learned to keep her head down, to blend in, to speak only when necessary, and to never, ever let her gaze linger too long on the faces that passed her by. The Oracle clan, with their chilling pronouncements and their unwavering belief in destiny, was a lifetime away. Or so she told herself.
Today, however, was different. A chill, unrelated to the sea breeze, snaked its way up her spine. It began as a subtle shift in the air, a sudden stillness amidst the usual cacophony. Her seer’s intuition, dormant for so long, pricked at her senses. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong.
