The salt spray was a constant kiss on Alice’s face, a bracing antidote to the lingering scent of dust and fear that clung to her like a second skin. Oakhaven. The name itself tasted of brine and distant horizons, a promise of anonymity in its very sound. She clutched the worn leather pouch tighter, the few coins within feeling both meager and monumental. Each step on the cobblestones was a victory, a tiny rebellion against the gilded halls of the Oracle clan and the suffocating weight of their traditions.

The city assaulted her senses. A cacophony of shouts, the creak of timbers, the squawk of gulls, the low rumble of carts – it was a symphony of life, raw and untamed, so unlike the measured, hushed reverence of her former home. The air was thick with the mingled aromas of fish, tar, sweat, and something vaguely sweet, perhaps spices from a ship newly arrived from lands she could only imagine. Buildings, crammed together like drunken sailors, leaned precariously over narrow alleys, their upper stories almost touching, casting the streets below into perpetual twilight. Oakhaven was a creature of shadow and clamor, and Alice, with her newly darkened hair hidden beneath a coarse hood, felt a strange kinship with its hidden corners.

She moved with a practiced stealth, a skill honed by years of observing without being seen, of listening without being heard. Her silver hair, once a beacon of her lineage, was now a carefully guarded secret, tucked away, each strand a potential betrayal. She’d dyed it herself, a desperate, messy affair in a hidden stream miles from the clan’s sacred grounds. The black dye had stained her fingers for days, a constant reminder of the severing, the flight. It wasn’t perfect; under the harsh sun, a faint sheen of silver still peeked through, but in the perpetual gloom of Oakhaven’s alleys, it was enough. It had to be.
