The air thrummed with a frantic energy, a discordant symphony of panic and fury. Alice, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs, watched the scene unfold from the shadowed alcove she’d claimed as a temporary sanctuary. The grand plaza of the Oracle Temple, usually a place of hushed reverence and somber processions, was now a chaotic battlefield. Torches, once symbols of enlightenment, were wielded as weapons, their flickering flames casting monstrous shadows that danced with the desperation of those caught in the fray.

The Night of Seeding. It was supposed to be a sacred, terrifying culmination, a ritual that bound the clan to their ancient pact. But tonight, it was unraveling. Alice had glimpsed the truth in her visions, a truth Roric and his rebels had fought to expose. The "seeding" wasn't about renewal; it was about sacrifice. Not of the willing, but of the chosen, their life force siphoned to fuel the clan's unnaturally long existence. And she, Alice Nightroad, was to be the vessel.

Elder Kaelen’s roar, a sound like stones grinding against stone, cut through the din. He stood at the temple steps, his silver-trimmed robes stained with blood, his face a mask of incandescent rage. Around him, the remaining Oracle warriors, their faces pale and drawn, fought with a ferocity born of desperation. They were outnumbered, outmaneuvered, and, worst of all, their divine mandate was shattered.
