Chapter 16
A Vision of Defeat
Alice foresees a devastating loss for the rebels if they attack the clan stronghold directly. She must find a way to warn them and alter their fate.
The air in the hidden rebel camp was thick with anticipation, a palpable hum of nervous energy that vibrated through the rough-hewn timbers of their makeshift barracks. Alice sat by the dying embers of a fire, the rough wool of her cloak scratching against her skin, a constant reminder of the life she’d painstakingly built, a life now teetering on the precipice of unraveling. The weight of it pressed down on her, a physical ache in her chest. She’d seen the flicker of the future in her mind’s eye, a tapestry woven with threads of blood and despair, and the vision had left her breathless, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

A cheer rose, a wave of fierce resolve washing over the camp. Alice’s stomach twisted. Dawn. They planned to attack at dawn. Her vision had shown dawn, but not the glorious victory Roric painted. It had shown chaos, a desperate, bloody retreat, the rebels scattered like leaves in a gale, their hopes dashed against the unyielding stone of the Oracle stronghold. She saw Roric fall, his banner trampled in the mud, his defiant cry silenced. She saw Lyra, her eyes wide with terror, her agile form overwhelmed. The images burned behind her eyelids, a searing brand of impending doom.
