Chapter 15
Elder Kaelen's Fury
Elder Kaelen learns of Alice's defiance and her alliance with the rebels. His pursuit intensifies, fueled by rage and a desperate need to fulfill the ritual.
Elder Kaelen’s eyes, usually pools of placid wisdom, now blazed with an inferno of disbelief and incandescent rage. The parchment, clutched in his aged, gnarled hand, trembled as if mirroring the tempest raging within him. “Defiance,” he spat the word, each syllable laced with venom. “She *dared*.” The whisper that had reached him, carried on the winds of the Oracle clan’s vast network, spoke of Alice, his prized seer, not merely escaping the Night of Seeding, but actively *combating* the clan’s efforts to retrieve her. The whispers spoke of her newfound allies, of a rebellion coalescing around her defiance, and a name, a name that sent a cold dread through Kaelen’s heart: Roric.
He slammed his fist against the ancient stone of his study, the sound echoing through the silent chambers. The tapestries depicting the sacred lineage of seers seemed to recoil from his fury. Alice, his Alice, the one he had groomed, nurtured, and prepared for the sacred duty, had turned her back on everything. She had traded the silver threads of her destiny for the coarse fabric of rebellion. The Night of Seeding was not a choice, it was a *necessity*. The Oracle clan’s very survival depended on the purity of the seed, on the unbroken lineage of their seers. And Alice, with her unparalleled gift, was the linchpin.
“They lie,” he growled, his voice a low rumble of thunder. “She would never betray us. She is too pure, too devoted.” But even as he uttered the words, a sliver of doubt, sharp and unwelcome, pierced his conviction. He remembered the flicker of apprehension in her eyes, the subtle resistance he’d sensed in her during their last private communion. He had dismissed it then, attributing it to the natural anxieties of a young seer on the cusp of her calling. Now, that apprehension seemed like a premonition, a desperate plea for help he had failed to heed.
