Chapter 11
The Oracle's Reach
News arrives of the Oracle clan's increasing oppression in nearby villages. Alice realizes her clan's darkness extends far beyond the ritual.
The salt spray stung Alice’s cheeks, a familiar bite that had once been a comfort, a promise of the vast, open world beyond the Oracle clan’s cloistered mountains. Now, it was just another reminder of her escape, of the life she’d clawed her way towards in this sprawling, chaotic port city. She leaned against the rough-hewn wood of the dock, the cacophony of hawkers, creaking ships, and squawking gulls a constant, overwhelming symphony. It had been weeks since she’d arrived, weeks of blending into the teeming masses, her once-silver hair now a dull, unremarkable black, her seer’s robes traded for coarse, mended tunics.
A flicker of movement caught her eye. A grizzled fisherman, his face a roadmap of sun and sea, was arguing with a merchant over the price of a catch. Alice’s gaze drifted, and for a heart-stopping moment, she saw it – a glint of silver, too bright, too pure to be anything but the tell-tale sign of an Oracle. It was gone in an instant, lost in the throng, but the cold dread that seized her was as potent as any vision. They were here. They had found her.
She pulled her hood further over her face, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The port, once a sanctuary, now felt like a cage. Every shadow seemed to lengthen, every unfamiliar face held a potential threat. She remembered the cold, unwavering gaze of Elder Kaelen, his voice a silken whisper that promised damnation disguised as destiny. The Night of Seeding. The thought sent a shiver down her spine, a phantom chill that had nothing to do with the sea breeze. She had run so far, changed so much, but the Oracle clan’s reach, it seemed, was as long as the tides.
