Chapter 10
A Shared Burden
Lyra, a kind rebel, sees Alice's fear and offers her cautious support. She begins to bridge the gap between Alice and Roric's hardened group.
The air in the cramped, shadowy room hung thick with the scent of brine and desperation. Alice huddled on a straw-filled pallet, her newly blackened hair a heavy, unfamiliar weight against her skin. Each creak of the ship’s timbers, each distant shout from the docks, sent a fresh tremor of fear through her. She was a ghost in this city of shadows, a phantom of her former life, and the anonymity was a fragile shield she clung to with every fiber of her being. The memory of Elder Kaelen’s cold, unwavering gaze, the chilling echo of the Night of Seeding, still clawed at the edges of her mind, threatening to pull her back into the suffocating embrace of the Oracle clan.
A soft knock startled her. Her heart leaped into her throat, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. She tensed, every muscle coiled, ready to bolt. But the knock was hesitant, gentle, not the demanding rap of clan enforcers. A moment later, the door creaked open, revealing a young woman silhouetted against the dim light of the corridor. Her features were softened by the gloom, but Alice recognized her as Lyra, the one who had helped her escape the marketplace brawl, the one with eyes that held a surprising depth of kindness.
Lyra entered the room slowly, her movements cautious, her gaze sweeping over Alice with a mixture of curiosity and concern. She carried a small, wrapped parcel. “Are you alright?” she asked, her voice a low murmur, careful not to disturb the fragile peace of the room.
