The air in the small cottage hung heavy, not just with the scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke, but with a palpable stillness. It was a stillness that had settled over their village like a shroud, mirroring the quiet that had stolen into Elara’s grandmother’s room. Sunlight, once a cheerful visitor, now trickled through the grimy windowpanes in weak, hesitant beams, illuminating dust motes dancing in the hushed air. Elara sat by the bedside, her fingers tracing the delicate, papery skin of her grandmother’s hand. Each breath was a shallow whisper, a fragile melody that threatened to fade entirely.

It mirrored the slow fading of her grandmother’s own vibrant spirit, a sickness that no poultice or potion could touch.
