The Shimmering Crystal pulsed with a soft, warm light in Creed’s outstretched hand, a tiny sun born from the heart of the Whispering Woods. CarterJean gasped, her eyes wide with wonder, reflecting the crystal’s glow. The air around them, which had thrummed with the gentle magic of the forest, now seemed to hold its breath. A hushed silence fell, heavier and more profound than any they had experienced before. It was the kind of silence that precedes a storm, a stillness that felt charged with an unseen power.

“It’s… it’s beautiful,” CarterJean whispered, her voice barely audible above the sudden thumping of her own heart. Creed nodded, his gaze fixed on the crystal, its facets catching and amplifying the dim light that filtered through the ancient canopy. He felt a surge of accomplishment, a thrill that danced on the edge of pride. They had done it. They had found the artifact.

But the triumphant feeling was short-lived, like a flicker of flame in a gust of wind. A chill, unnatural and biting, snaked through the clearing, raising goosebumps on their arms. The vibrant greens of the moss and leaves seemed to dim, the cheerful dappled sunlight turning sickly and grey. A shadow, deeper and more absolute than any natural twilight, began to creep from the edges of the clearing, swallowing the light and the color with a terrifying speed.
