Fragile Trust
Chloe must protect a man who doesn't remember choosing her, while evading unseen threats. Their fractured history becomes a fragile battleground for their survival.
The sterile white walls of Major Vance’s quarters felt like a tomb, each polished surface reflecting Chloe’s own carefully constructed composure. Five years. Five years of building walls, brick by painstaking brick, around the gaping wound Charles had left behind. She’d learned to live with the phantom ache, to translate grief into a steely resolve that had seen her rise in her field, respected, independent, and utterly alone. Now, she was back, a pawn in a game of familial obligation, married by proxy to a man who looked at her with the polite curiosity one might afford a distant acquaintance.
“You’ve… redecorated,” Charles said, his voice a low rumble that still vibrated in Chloe’s bones, an unwelcome echo of a past he couldn’t access. He gestured vaguely at the room, his gaze sweeping over the tasteful, understated furnishings she’d chosen. It was a stark contrast to the barracks-issue austerity he’d left behind, or so she imagined. She hadn’t been back to any military installation since that last, terrible summer.
Chloe forced a smile, a brittle thing that didn’t reach her eyes. “I thought it needed a bit of… warmth. Considering.” Considering they were married, considering their families expected them to produce an heir, considering the monumental lie they were living.
